Mike Peters
President
Mike Peters is UK Flour Millers' President and Whitworth Bros Ltd' Milling Group Advisor. He's been with the company since 2004 and was Managing Director from 2016 to late 2024. He was elected Vice President in 2024 and was elected President at our annual general meeting in 2025 as part of the biennial Convention.

Gary Sharkey
Immediate Past President (2023-2025)
Gary Sharkey was UK Flour Millers' President from 2023-2025 and Hovis' Procurement Director. He previously served as President of European Flour Millers.
Our team

Alistair Gale
Chief Executive Officer
Alistair oversees all activities associated with the organisation, leading the work of UK Flour Millers and representing the UK flour milling industry by supporting members across a range of areas. Prior to joining UK Flour Millers in 2023, Alistair worked in cement manufacturing, ports, and logistics. He has a BA (Hons) in Geography and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR). Alistair’s favourite treats involving flour include oat biscuits from a family recipe and homemade pizza, cooked in an outdoor oven.

Joe Brennan
Head of Technical and Regulatory Affairs
Joe leads UK Flour Millers’ technical team, including the review of contaminants and food safety, assurance, flour fortification, and variety development. He also sits on several external committees including Red Tractor Crops Technical Advisory Committee, Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board Recommended List for cereals and oilseeds, Wheat Crop Committee, Arable Chain Advisory Group, and is chairperson of the Ergot Working Group. Joe has been with UK Flour Millers since 2016, having received a BA in Natural Sciences (specialising in plant sciences) and previously worked at a biogas research facility, pressure cooking industrial poultry litter. He enjoys flour-filled treats such as kanelsnegle (Danish cinnamon rolls) and just a standard loaf of bread.

Ariane Derimay
Environment and Sustainability Manager
Ariane supports and provides advice to members regarding topics surrounding sustainability. She is in charge of monitoring current and emerging sustainability trends and represents the UK flour milling industry in cross-supply chain sustainability discussions and initiatives by engaging with stakeholders. Having joined UK Flour Millers in 2023, Ariane has experience in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMGC) sector, focusing on quality and sustainability. Previously, she implemented a wheat sustainability programme in collaboration with wheat chain players. Ariane’s accomplishments also include a MS in Biochemistry from Pierre and Marie Curie University, MS in Quality from Tours University, and a certificate from the University of Cambridge’s Institute for Sustainability Leadership, Business and Climate Change: Towards New Zero Emissions. She enjoys flour-filled goods such as bread dipped in fondue savoyarde (cheese fondue from France) and crumpets.

Steve Faerber
Training Manager
Steve oversees training activities at UK Flour Millers including the Micro Learning Programme, Distance Learning Programme, Advanced Milling Diploma, the Virtual Mill, and works on industry health and safety initiatives. He joined the UK Flour Millers team in 2022, utilising his background in training and development, focusing on engaging education and teacher training to develop and implement courses across industries. Steve has a certificate in education and is an assessor and verifier. He enjoys flour-filled meals such as traditional pasties and pancakes smothered in fruit and honey.

Rosie Tilling
Administration Support Officer
Rosie works within the training, operations, and communications programmes, assisting in the creation and dissemination of key deliverables, especially to Distance Learning Programme participants. She also focuses on administrative needs. Having joined the team in 2024, Rosie previously worked in public relations, marketing, and buying. She has a BA in Communications and MA in Marketing. Chocolate cake is Rosie’s favourite flour-filled treat, and a fresh loaf of bread straight from the oven closely follows. Rosie can be reached on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Sophie Young
Head of Operations
Sophie joined UK Flour Millers in 2014. She organises events internally and externally, provides office management, administration support, is responsible for meeting room enquiries and bookings, and oversees industry development training events. She is also a committee member for the London and South East Milling Society. Sophie’s favourite flour-filled foods are banana cake and cheese scones.

Liliane Baines
Communications Manager
Liliane provides tailored content to UK Flour Millers’ stakeholders that focuses on the dedication of UK flour millers, showcases the scale of the industry, and highlights the importance of flour to our everyday lives. Before joining the team in 2023, Liliane was a consultant for US government offices. She has a BA in International Studies, MBA, and MA in Advertising and Public Relations. She enjoys flour-packed snacks like pumpkin bread and Cincinnati chili, five ways.

Clayton Freedland
Financial Controller & Company Secretary
Clayton is responsible for the accounting and financial reporting activities of UK Flour Millers as well as treasury, asset management, maintaining records, payroll and pensions, preparing financial projections, and oversight of information and communications technology. He engages with banks, insurers, auditors, asset managers, pension providers, His Majesty's Revenue and Customs, Companies House, and the Information Commissioner's Office on behalf of the association. Clayton joined the association in 2000, becoming Financial Controller in 2010. He is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. Clayton can be reached on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and his favourite flour-based foods include doughnuts and lasagna.

Vanessa Freedland
Accounts Assistant
Vanessa is UK Flour Millers’ Accounts Assistant, contributing to the smooth running of the day-to-day activities of the accounting department and aiding the Company Financial Controller with several accounting related tasks. Vanessa joined the team in 2013 and oversees all aspect of the sales and purchase ledgers as well as credit control. She can be reached on Mondays and Wednesdays. Her favourite foods filled with flour include crostata di mirtilli (Italian blueberry tart), bread, and pizza.

Joanne John
Receptionist & Administration Support
Joanne joined UK Flour Millers in 2022 and provides reception management and administrative support, acting as the first point of contact for onsite tenants and visitors. Her responsibilities also include event management, house maintenance, social media, communications, research, and general support. Previously, Joanne worked as an administration manager, receptionist, executive assistant, and personal assistant in various sectors. Flour-based foods that Joanne enjoys include rum cake and bakes (bread with a variety of added fillings from Dominica).

Ray Smikle
House Manager
Ray and Sally-Anne are a couple, joining UK Flour Millers in 2020. Their responsibilities include living onsite and providing house management, reception duties, and facilities support. Ray’s favourite flour-packed foods include chocolate fondant and beef wellington.
