The UK Flour Millers and AIC harvest mycotoxin monitoring programme ran successfully again this year.
Ten weeks of deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZON) rapid test kit data were gathered from member companies and merchants. Whilst for DON there was 0.7% of the crop above the legal limit, the average levels were low.
For ZON, only 0.1% of the crop was above the legal limit, although a significant proportion of the crop contained low to moderate levels of ZON. For both mycotoxins, the risk of exceeding legal limits in flour when blending wheat from different farms was low.
A final report was sent to members on October 13 and included summaries of the data as well as maps of the results from the survey. Members can request a copy of the report from Joe Brennan.
