Face mask advice could increase PPE supply pressure

With many mills working round the clock to keep the nation supplied with flour, the pressure to keep employees stocked with PPE – especially FFP3 masks – has been acute. Now there is growing concern that recent government advice to the general public about wearing of masks could lead to further shortages.

As a result, nabim has been lobbying Defra to ensure that there are clear guidelines about the required specifications for face coverings. In particular, BEIS guidance made no reference to the risk to food safety posed by the incorrect use of masks in the workplace.

Thanks to these approaches, the government has now issued the relevant supporting guidance. However, supply difficulties are expected to continue for the immediate future and members are encouraged to contact nabim if they feel that their association can help in any way.
